Crowns and Bridges are used mainly to restore and enhance teeth that have been damaged or to replace missing teeth. A crown is commonly known as a cap, it is used to cover a damaged tooth in its entirety. A crown can make a tooth look dramatically better and it also improves the strength while fixing shape and alignment.
Crowns are used to:
- Replace a filling when there is very little tooth structure remaining.
- Attach a bridge
- Restore a fractured tooth
- Cover a tooth which has had a root canal treatment
- Give protection to a weak tooth so it doesn’t fracture.
- Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth or dental implant
A bridge is the ideal method in order to fill a gap that is created by missing teeth. A bridge is artificial teeth that are cemented to the teeth on either side in order to bridge the gap. Not only does the bridge replace the gap in cosmetic but it also replaces the functionality of the missing teeth. A few materials can be used, such as, porcelain bonded to metal alloy, gold alloys or all ceramic material made to match your tooth color. The choice often depends on the strength, wear or aesthetics needed.
